Sayyid Jaʿfar Murtaḍā al‑ʿĀmilī, Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī (a) (The Authentic Account of the Life of Imām ʿAlī), 1st ed., 53 vols., Qom: Center for Publication and Translation of the Works of ʿAllāma Sayyid Jaʿfar Murtaḍā al‑ʿĀmilī, 2016.

Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī (a) (The Authentic Account of the Life of Imām ʿAlī) is an extensive historical and analytical work written by the prominent Shiʿi scholar Sayyid Jaʿfar Murtaḍā al‑ʿĀmilī. The book was first published in 2009 (1388 SH) in 20 volumes by Wilāʾ Muntaẓar Institute with the support of the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. The project later expanded and was eventually published in 53 volumes, making it one of the most comprehensive modern works on the life of Imām ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (a). Because of its scholarly significance, the book received the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Book of the Year Award in 2017. The work is also known by another title: al‑Murtaḍā min Sīrat al‑Murtaḍā.

The author, Sayyid Jaʿfar Murtaḍā al‑ʿĀmilī (1364–1441 AH / 1945–2019), was a renowned historian of Islam and a specialist in the biography (sīra) of the Prophet (s) and the Imāms (a). Born in southern Lebanon, he pursued traditional religious studies in the seminaries of Najaf and later Qom. Over time, he became widely recognized as one of the leading contemporary scholars in the field of Islamic historiography and Shiʿi studies. The historian Rasul Jaʿfariyān notes that historical studies had not been widely cultivated in the Qom seminary until scholars such as al‑ʿĀmilī revived serious historical research there. In addition to the present work, he authored the monumental Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Nabī al‑Aʿẓam (s) (The Authentic Biography of the Prophet), a multi‑volume study on the life of Prophet Muḥammad (s).

The motivation behind writing Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī stems from the author’s conviction that the personality and historical role of Imām ʿAlī (a) have not been sufficiently studied in a comprehensive and critical manner. According to al‑ʿĀmilī, reducing Imām ʿAlī (a) to a single dimension—whether political, spiritual, or theological—constitutes a distortion of Islamic history. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to present a holistic and analytically grounded portrait of Imām ʿAlī’s life, covering his intellectual, ethical, political, and spiritual dimensions within their historical context.

The central objective of Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī (a) is to reconstruct the life of Imām ʿAlī (a) through a careful historical investigation of sources and events. Rather than presenting a simple chronological narrative, al‑ʿĀmilī combines historical reporting with analytical interpretation. The work examines the political positions, ethical attitudes, and theological implications of Imām ʿAlī’s actions in relation to the social and historical circumstances surrounding him.

A distinctive methodological feature of the book is the author’s insistence that the biography of Imām ʿAlī (a) should not be divided artificially into thematic categories such as “politics,” “ethics,” or “spirituality.” Instead, al‑ʿĀmilī argues that these dimensions can only be properly understood within the chronological flow of historical events. For this reason, the book follows a strictly chronological structure, analyzing events in the order in which they occurred.

The work is broadly divided into several major sections corresponding to the main phases of Imām ʿAlī’s life.

The first section focuses on the life of Imām ʿAlī (a) during the lifetime of the Prophet Muḥammad (s). This part examines topics such as the lineage and birth of Imām ʿAlī (a), his early upbringing in the household of the Prophet (s), and his unique spiritual and moral status. The author also discusses the question of the first conversion to Islam, presenting arguments that Imām ʿAlī (a) was the earliest believer among men.

Several important events in early Islamic history are analyzed in detail in this section. These include the Invitation to the Close Relatives, the Hijra (migration) of the Prophet (s) and Imām ʿAlī’s act of sleeping in the Prophet’s bed on the night of the migration, and the brotherhood pact (muʾākhāt) established by the Prophet (s) between himself and Imām ʿAlī (a). The author also studies Imām ʿAlī’s role in major battles such as Uḥud, Khandaq, and Khaybar, emphasizing his military courage and strategic importance.

Furthermore, the book analyzes several well‑known Prophetic traditions and Qurʾanic verses associated with Imām ʿAlī (a). Among them are the Ḥadīth al‑Manzila (Tradition of the Rank), the Event of Ghadīr Khumm, the Verse of Purification (Āyat al‑Taṭhīr), and the Ḥadīth al‑Kisāʾ (Tradition of the Cloak). The section concludes with discussions of the Prophet’s final illness and death.

The second section examines the historical period from the demise of the Prophet (s) until the public allegiance (bayʿa) to Imām ʿAlī (a). This part deals with several critical events that shaped early Islamic political history. Among the most important issues analyzed are the assembly of Saqīfa, the debate over the inheritance of the Prophet (s) and the case of Fadak, and the role of Imām ʿAlī (a) in legal judgments and scholarly consultations during the reigns of the early caliphs.

Al‑ʿĀmilī also discusses the compilation of the Qurʾān by Imām ʿAlī (Muṣḥaf ʿAlī) and clarifies that it did not differ from the current Qurʾānic text in wording; rather, it included interpretive explanations and contextual clarifications. The author further examines the political events under the caliphates of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān, including military expansions, internal administrative policies, and the growing political tensions that ultimately led to the assassination of ʿUthmān.

The third section of the book deals with the caliphate of Imām ʿAlī (a). Here the author analyzes the circumstances surrounding the public pledge of allegiance to him and discusses why Imām ʿAlī (a) initially refrained from accepting political authority. The events leading to the establishment of his caliphate are explored alongside the social pressures and expectations that shaped his leadership.

The fourth section studies the major developments during Imām ʿAlī’s rule. This includes his administrative policies, his treatment of governors and officials, and his commitment to justice and equality. The author also presents examples of Imām ʿAlī’s judicial decisions and intellectual debates with both Muslims and non‑Muslims.

Particular attention is given to the conflicts that emerged during his caliphate, including the confrontation with the Nākithūn (the oath‑breakers) and the events that led to the Battle of Jamal. Through detailed analysis of historical sources, al‑ʿĀmilī attempts to clarify the motivations of the different parties involved and to demonstrate Imām ʿAlī’s ethical and political principles in managing these crises.

Another important feature of the book is the author’s critical approach to historical sources. He draws upon both Sunni and Shiʿi historical and ḥadīth literature, treating them with methodological scrutiny. Al‑ʿĀmilī is particularly attentive to the possibility that some narratives were influenced by exaggeration or sectarian bias, including reports associated with extremist exaggerators (ghulāt). Consequently, he carefully evaluates the reliability of reports and attempts to reconstruct historically credible accounts.

Overall, the book provides not only a chronological biography but also a comprehensive analytical reconstruction of Imām ʿAlī’s life and legacy within early Islamic history.

Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī is primarily intended for scholars, researchers, graduate students, and serious readers of Islamic history, particularly those interested in Shiʿi studies and the biography of the Imāms (a). Due to its extensive documentation and analytical depth, the work functions not merely as a biography but as a major reference source for the study of early Islamic history.

Within the broader field of Islamic studies, the book occupies an important scholarly position. By systematically examining reports from both Sunni and Shiʿi sources, the author seeks to reconstruct a historically coherent and academically defensible account of Imām ʿAlī’s life.

One of the major strengths of the work lies in its methodological rigor. The author does not merely reproduce historical reports but analyzes their chains of transmission, historical plausibility, and ideological context. This critical method enables him to challenge exaggerated or unreliable narratives and to highlight more credible accounts.

Another notable strength is the comprehensiveness of the study. The large number of volumes allows the author to examine events in great detail and to explore theological, ethical, and political dimensions simultaneously. This breadth makes the book one of the most extensive contemporary studies devoted to Imām ʿAlī (a).

Finally, the work contributes significantly to the revival of historical scholarship in Shiʿi seminaries, particularly in Qom, where systematic historical research had previously received limited attention.

In conclusion, Al‑Ṣaḥīḥ min Sīrat al‑Imām ʿAlī (a) represents one of the most comprehensive modern studies on the life of Imām ʿAlī (a). Through a combination of chronological narration, critical analysis of sources, and careful interpretation of historical events, Sayyid Jaʿfar Murtaḍā al‑ʿĀmilī provides a detailed and multidimensional portrait of one of the most influential figures in Islamic history.

Although the extensive size of the work may make it challenging for general readers, it is an invaluable resource for scholars, researchers, and advanced students of Islamic studies. The book offers a rich foundation for further research on early Islamic history, Shiʿi thought, and the political and ethical legacy of Imām ʿAlī (a).

For academics and students seeking a methodologically rigorous and comprehensive study of Imām ʿAlī’s life, this work can be considered one of the most significant contemporary contributions to the field of Islamic historiography.
